The April edition of #PRSJournalClub was another excellent discussion from the thought-provoking PRS article entitled “Abdominal Etching: Surgical Technique and Outcomes” by Husain, Salgado, Mundra, Perez, AlQattan, Bustillo, Perez and Garri. This also represented the highly interactive #PRSJournalClub live discussion on the #PRSJournal Facebook page. The full text of the article can be found here

This study by Husain et al. describes their current technique and outcomes on Abdominal Etching. The method, which may not be familiar for a general plastic surgeon population, is a technique to create a “six pack abs” look for male or to increase definition of vertical abdominal lines in female patients. Utilizing this liposuction technique combined with post-operative diet regimen, the authors could achieve high-definition of abdominal aesthetics that patients were unable to obtain through standard diet and exercise. Because, no matter how hard patients out or how well they eat, sometimes they just can’t always get that classic “6-pack” shape.

In this article, the authors describe their insight for selecting suitable candidates for the abdominal etching procedures and what to look preoperatively. They also accentuate the importance of pre-operative counseling for patients to achieve reasonable goals and to maintain the results postoperatively.  A detailed description of the technique, including the surgical markings, infiltration solutions, incision approach, instruments, liposuction devices, and the post-operative dressing was discussed, with a supplemental video. One of the most crucial aspects of the technique is the post-operative regimen that includes diet and exercise to maintain the results over time. Tips from the authors to manage complications were also discussed. This valuable article is especially relevant for plastic surgeons who want to elevate their liposuction game to the next level in their practices.

The article was first discussed by the 2019 PRS Resident Ambassadors Lily Mundy, MD; Raj Parikh, MD; Kyle Sanniec, MD; and the special guest moderator Rudolf Buntic, MD. Listen to the podcast discussion below:

In a #PRSHotTopic video, Editor-in-Chief Dr. Rod J. Rohrich discusses the article and highlights essential points from their work. This short video can be watched here:

An excellent and thought-provoking live discussion also took place on the #PRSJournal Facebook Page over two days (April 27-28), where plastic surgeons and residents around the globe were able to interact directly, and get their questions answered by the authors of the article themselves! This time, the authors very eagerly answered every question from the audience and shared their techniques in depth with their tips and tricks. In case you missed the great live discussion, don’t worry! We’ll give you the highlights of the most important points here.

We hope you enjoy our summary from the discussion and hope to see you at the next great #PRSJournalClub on Facebook!
